Chiang Mai
Thanin Market in the morning, the one no tour goes to. Twenty minutes in those aisles is a better cooking class than most cooking classes. Bought fruit I couldn't name. Read at a cafe for two hours. Then dinner with the couple from the trail at their favorite place, a family restaurant off Nimman with no English menu. Gaeng hang lay, the slow pork curry with ginger and tamarind, sai ua sausage, sticky rice in a basket, and tall glasses of nam anchan, butterfly pea tea that turns from blue to
purple when you squeeze the lime in. They would not let me pay. Sunday Walking Street after, a mile of food and lanterns and a blind man playing a saw. Best Sunday in years.
